This program will be offered by the Division of EECS through the joint efforts of the Departments of CSA, ECE, EE, and ESE.

Top institutes like IIIT Hyderabad and several IITs have already launched a handful of courses in emerging technology, especially, AI.

During the first year, 40 students will be admitted to the programme at IISc Bangalore. After the students join, an equal number of students will be assigned to each of the four departments, purely for administrative purposes.

Course Curriculum

Topics Covered:

  • Data structures and Algorithms
  • Computational Linear Algebra
  • Pattern recognition and Neural networks

In the first semester, a faculty advisor will be assigned for discussing of courses and to get an introduction to IISc way of doing things.

The second semester duly commences on January 1 and concludes with final exams during April last week.

Following the second semester, during May, June, and July, the student will get started on the research. This may involve an internship in the industry especially if the work is aligned with the project topic. Alternatively, the candidate may prefer to work in IISc with their Project advisor, assigned in the second semester.

The third semester commences on August 1st. The candidate should consult project advisor and choose the remaining courses to complete at least 43 credits of coursework.

The fourth semester will focus on project work, writing a research paper, filing a patent or releasing a software product.

If the dissertation during M.Tech is research-oriented, then the student can opt for a PhD program at IISc.

How To Enroll

The interested candidates must have a valid GATE score in CS, EC, or EE papers to apply. The admission is through a written test followed by an interview. Applicants from CS, EC, and EE GATE disciplines will be called for interview based on their GATE scores.

The written test will involve basics of programming and basic engineering mathematics. The interview will be on these topics as well as the GATE subject area.

For 2020 admissions, IISc plans to review the program and will consider including other GATE disciplines as well.

The number of students to be called will be approximately 10 times the number of seats, with an equal number called from each of the above GATE disciplines.

This will determine the GATE cut off scores. There will be a written test on April 15, 2019. Only those who clear the written test will be called for interviews.

IISc has a department called Robert Bosch Centre for Cyber Physical Systems established in 2011, which has research in robotics and automation. The centre is funded by a philanthropic grant by Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions, India and also receives targeted and project-oriented funding from other funding agencies.

It focuses on experimental and theoretical research to gain a deep understanding of key cyber-physical system (CPS) components. The centre brings together expertise from various departments and in conjunction with in-house research staff and students to develop and apply CPS concepts in the areas of IoT enabled socio-technical systems, autonomous navigation of unmanned vehicles and machine learning.
