US-based MNC, Oracle is looking to launch its first India data centre later this year in India. The data centre, which will be set up in Mumbai, will help Oracle take on bigwigs like Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Microsoft Azure who have a significant presence in the country.

“We see huge prospects for India which is currently the sixth biggest country in the world for us in terms of revenue standpoint. That is why we are building up a data centre for the Cloud here. I am sure that is just the first of the many data centres coming as our business grows,” said Andrew Mendelsohn, Executive Vice President, Oracle Database to a leading newswire.

The data centre will be looking at Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) workloads, and the company is also testing for Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) on the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI), along with other modalities before it is opened for the market.

According to Shailender Kumar, Regional Managing Director, Oracle India, the MNC is committed to bringing our enterprise Cloud to customers globally and will continue to support customer and partner demands.

He further added that Indian customers are fast embracing and upgrading to Autonomous Database, a self-driving software that uses Machine Learning to enable unprecedented availability, high performance and security at a much lower cost. As we move forward, AI and ML along with Big data and Analytics will play a major role, so will the bots, IoT and blockchain.

India is one of the largest and fastest-growing cloud services markets in the Asia Pacific, second only to China. Oracle will be facing tough competition from AWS which already has two availability zones in Mumbai while Microsoft has three of its 54 global data centres at three locations in Mumbai, Pune and Chennai.
