After Facebook, Aadhar and Sacramento Bee, community-curated Q&A website Quora has become the latest victim of a massive data breach. Adam D’ Angelo, CEO at Quora posted an update saying, “We’re in the process of notifying users whose data has been compromised”.
According to their official statement, 100 million users are vulnerable to valuable information being leaked. This includes data like name, address, password, public and non-public content posted on the website and shared on other networks being leaked.
Data breaches have grown in number over the last three to four years. Quora has informed affected users that they would be getting notifications on emails regarding the same. Also, many users have been logged out, to protect their data.
According to a survey conducted by Alexa, in 2017, around 20.7% of Quora visitors were Indians. The reason for Indians (especially youth) joining Quora is the no-ads policy, the fun interactive system that allows people to interact via questions and answers and also how it doesn’t track users’ data, unlike popular social networking sites or and search engines. These attributes have made Quora more popular than Facebook and Instagram in India. A Quartz report suggests that India’s monthly visitors at Quora are estimated at 8.8 lakh. Google Trends also shows a rapid increase in the rate of interest on Quora in Indians.
The Quora team added in the statement, “It is our responsibility to make sure things like this don’t happen, and we failed to meet that responsibility. We recognise that in order to maintain user trust, we need to work very hard to make sure this does not happen again. There’s little hope of sharing and growing the world’s knowledge if those doing so cannot feel safe and secure, and cannot trust that their information will remain private. We are continuing to work very hard to remedy the situation, and we hope over time to prove that we are worthy of your trust.”
