With Artificial Intelligence (AI) holding a strong presence in the private sector, it will soon aid tactical elements associated with military operations. Realising this potential, the Government of India is now on the path to use AI-related technologies in national military services.
Highlighting on this progress, Subhash Bhamre, Minister of State for Defence announced in the Lok Sabha that the Ministry is in talks with the Indian defence forces for utilising artificial intelligence in their arsenal.
Bhamre added that AI had the “potential to fuel technology-driven economic growth and provide military superiority.”
Earlier in February, a task force for AI was constituted by the Indian government to look after affairs related to AI, technology and its impact on economic growth of the country. The 17-member task force has been set up under the chairmanship of Tata Sons chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran to finalise the specifics and framework of the AI projects. These projects would be implemented in a partnership model between the private sector and the armed forces. The task force also includes national cybersecurity coordinator Gulshan Rai, IIT and IISc professors as well as two and three-star generals and representatives from ISRO, DRDO and Atomic Energy Commission.
A few months ago, in keeping with the current government’s emphasis on new tech, Army Chief General Bipin Rawat had stressed the need to institutionalise data and carry out predictive analytics using artificial intelligence.
General Rawat had added, “The armed forces are the repository of big data and there is a need to record and institutionalise the information and carry out predictive analytics using AI.”
